boehner knows this. this is why boehner is now coming to the table saying, all right, we can't do the cliff thing, we'll get the political hit for it and we'll also be in a bad negotiating position. but he has to identify where the money's coming from. and it's got to be rates. i get a sense in washington that the democrats have drawn the line in the sand on rates. if you can't get rates, you can't get anything else. boehner's going to come out and identify a bunch of deductions. that's not going to be enough. you got to go the rates. once you do the rates, everything else might fall in place because do i think the white house will negotiate. >> i want to go over the stakes of all of this just for the average american family, if we do go over the cliff, about 90% of households would end up paying almost $3,500 more in taxes and one in five action pai -- taxpayers would have to pay the alternative minimum tax, which would mean an increase of $3,700 more of what you already know and those on unemployment i

president obama and speaker boehner. nobody else. with 24 days before a year-end deadline, "the new york times" says boehner made the request to clear the negotiation room going forward, leaving it up to himself and the president to reach a deal to avoid automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts. and while the two men may be negotiating privately, yesterday the president took his message to the public, visiting a local virginia family as a part of his my2k social media campaign, sitting around the kitchen table. he told the family he was optimistic. >> the message that i think we all want to send to members of congress is, this is a solvable problem. the senate has already passed a bill that would make sure the middle-class taxes don't go up next year by a single dime. just to be clear, i'm not going to sign any package that somehow prevents the top rate from going up for folks at the top 2%. but i do remain optimistic that we can get something done that is good for families like this one and that is good for the american economy. >

what's fascinating is boehner is in exactly the same position that obama was in the lame-duck session in 2010. where a lot of the left was like when they were talking about extending the bush tax cuts. a lot of the left was saying -- even some centrist democrats were mad at the president because he was going to make that compromised deal. they were saying republicans won the election. and if we don't do this deal now, we're going to get a worse deal in january or february. that's the reality. we don't like this deal, but it will be worse for us two months from now. do you guys see that? there's no end game that's better for you, left. and in the end, the left, with the help of clinton convincing making that case, too, the democratic left backed down. president obama made that deal. boehner is going to be making a similar argument internally in his caucus now, which is just the reality of i get what you ran on, and i get that your politics are anti-tax, but if we don't make this deal today, it's going to be worse in january or february from your point of view. we're going to get a wors

according to "politico" house republican leaders recognize president obama holds the high cards and the public is likely to blame republicans if negotiations blow up and the new year begins with a fiscal disaster. the facts didn't stop speaker boehner from claiming the white house is holding up negotiations. >> majority leader and i just had a meeting with the treasury secretary. it was frank, and it was direct. i was hopeful we'd see a specific plan for cutting spending. >> the treasury secretary's proposal seems pretty specific. it even includes $400 billion in specific cuts. but john boehner sees something different. >> we know what the menu is. what we don't know is what the white house is willing to do to get serious about solving our debt crisis. >> so what is this all about? i mean, i guess john boehner has his own definition of specifics. according to the john boehner dictionary, specifics means, having all the attributes john boehner agrees with and nothing he doesn't like. keep in mind, this is the same boehner who said $38 billion in cuts was the largest real dollar spending

speaker boehner is ready today. let's get the job done. >> all right. congresswoman kathy mcmorris rodgers. thank you for coming on the show. come back, glad you're there in the negotiations talking to everybody. >> eugene robinson, final thoughts this block? >> well, you know, actually congress and the president have agreed on a huge deficit reduction package. it's called the fiscal cliff. so, you know, in my darker moments, i think we're going over it, and what if we went over it and the world didn't end? that would be kind of interesting. we'd take a big bite out of the deficit and everybody's taxes would go up, but i think the sun would come up tomorrow. >> huh. >> we may find out. >> okay, little orphan annie. >> so, gene, do you think right now that's you advise the president to do if the republicans don't come forward with more specifics? >> if i'm advising the president right now i'm advising him to wait a while. and that maybe when we get closer to the date, the calendar will concentrate the minds of many people in washington and a conversation
